WOMEN WHO CONQUER MOUNTAINS: The Rising Power of Women Trekkers in YHAI
Shattering Stereotypes
and Breaking Barriers
It was in 1984 when
Bachendri Pal became the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount
Everest. There are so many women who have been venturing onto trekking and
mountaineering which were considered male-dominated domains.
Rise of Women Trekkers
in YHAI
Indeed, times have
changed and Youth Hostels Association of India has been witness to this
changing trend in their membership and programs. Women trekkers are
increasingly making their mark, pushing boundaries, and inspiring others to
follow suit.
From the snowy peaks of
the Himalayas to the lush trails of the Western Ghats, women are proving
they're just as capable as men when it comes to tackling the great outdoors.
There are YHAI Units with majority women members. Leadership positions are
being held with dignity and dutifulness by women at the Unit, State and
National level of YHAI.
Women Empowerment
Through Trekking
It is pertinent to note
that women trekkers face unique challenges, from societal expectations to
physical demands. Yet, they're not just overcoming these obstacles – they are
thriving. Many have gone on to be leaders, guiding others and paving the way
for future generations.
For women trekkers,
safety and hygiene is a top concern. YHAI organisers, camp leaders and guides
prioritize safety, providing support and ensuring women feel comfortable and
safe on the trails and at the camps.
Building a Strong
Community of Women Adventurers
The change is primarily
due to growing participation in YHAI trekking programs by women trekkers. Many
of women members have been displaying their competence as camp leaders and
taking on various roles and responsibilities in YHAI activities and programs.
YHAI is implementing best practices by providing separate accommodations and emergency protocols. Women trekkers in YHAI have widened the platforms for women to come together, share experiences, and explore the thrill of trekking.
