Youth Hostels Association of India: Where Adventure
Meets Affordable Travel
If your idea of a perfect holiday is more mountains and less malls,
more sunrise treks and fewer snooze alarms, then welcome to the world of the
Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI)!
The youth hostel movement began in Germany in the early 20th century
when Richard Schirrmann had a simple but powerful idea:
π Young people should travel, learn and
grow without burning a hole in their pockets.
Because let’s be honest… travel makes us wiser. Also, slightly poorer. But YHAI fixes the second part π.
A Journey from Germany to India
The movement reached India before independence, with the first youth
hostel in Shimla in 1945. Later, in 1949, a passionate group in Mysore came
together to promote this concept. This led to the formation of YHAI in 1952 and
its expansion at a national level in 1956.
Today, YHAI is among India’s leading organizations promoting:
✔ Adventure
✔ Budget travel
✔ Environmental awareness
✔ Youth leadership
✔ National integration
Basically, it helps you become fitter, wiser and happier… all while posting amazing travel photos on Instagram π
Why YHAI is Not Just for “Hardcore Trekkers”
Think YHAI is only for super-fit people who run up mountains before
breakfast?
Nope!
Whether you are:
• A beginner
• A nature lover
• A family traveller
• A student on a budget
• Or someone who just wants to escape
office emails
There’s something for everyone.
Even if you start the trek for fitness, you may end it for the Maggi
at the summit π.
